Introduction: Computer Game Addiction, as a growing challenge in adolescent mental health and social adjustment, requires explanation based on coherent theoretical models. This study aimed to explain the model of computer game addiction based on parenting styles with the mediating role of loneliness in students aged 12 to 18 years.
Methods: This descriptive-correlational study employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The statistical population included all first and second-level students in Isfahan city during the academic year 2024-2025. A sample of 215 was selected via convenience sampling, and after removing outliers, 200 valid questionnaires were analyzed. Data were collected using Robinson et al.'s (2001) Parenting Styles Questionnaire, Whang and Chang's (2002) Computer Game Addiction Scale, and Asher's (1984) Loneliness Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS-22 and AMOS-22 software with bootstrapping (5000 iterations).
Results: Model fit indices were adequate (χ²/df=2.67, CFI=0.934, GFI=0.983, RMSEA=0.03, SRMR=0.06). Path analysis revealed that the direct paths from parenting styles to game addiction were non-significant. However, loneliness played a full mediation role in this relationship. Authoritative parenting indirectly reduced game addiction by decreasing loneliness (β=-0.45), whereas authoritarian (β=0.28) and permissive (β=0.19) styles indirectly increased it by elevating loneliness. The indirect effects through loneliness were significant for authoritative (β=-0.184), authoritarian (β=0.115), and permissive (β=0.078) styles.
Conclusion: Parenting styles influence computer game addiction exclusively through indirect pathways, fully mediated by loneliness. Adolescent health nurses and school nurses can prevent digital addictive behaviors by screening for loneliness in health clinics and designing family-centered interventions based on promoting authoritative parenting.
