The academic achievement of medical students is related to the health of the community; therefore, the reduction or increase in motivation and the factors affecting it will have a great impact on the individual and the health of the community. Social networks and the Internet are factors that influence the students' academic progress and motivation. Method: In this descriptive-analytical study 300 students from Bojnurd University of Medical Sciences in (2016-2017) were selected with Stratified Random Sampling and entered in this study. The data were collected and analyzed by demographic questionnaire, Yang's internet addiction inventory and Inventory of School Motivation (ISM). data were fed into SPSS-16 software and were analyzed using independent t-test and pearson correlation .P<0.05 was considered statistically significant . Results: Entertainment has been reported due to the use of social networks in 162 (54%). Social network users were: 273 (91%) Telegrams, 17 (%5.7) Instagrams, 1 (%0.3) lines, 1 (0.3%) Viber, 4 (1.3%) Beetalk, 4 (1.3%) Facebook. Internet addiction scores, time spent using social networks during the day, and academic motivation score were respectively :(16.93 ± 44.53), (2.59 ± 4.58) and (25.63 ± 146.78). There was a meaningful inverted and weak correlation between the academic achievement and the rate of using social networks (p=0.001 , r= - 0.245). There was a meaningful inverted and very weak correlation between the academic achievement and the internet addiction (p=0.001 , r= - 0.197). Conclusion: considering that medical science students are responsible for the critical task of patient care and community health. The issue of their training, especially in the field of culture using social networks and the duration of using the Internet has a special sensitivity. Therefore, considering the students' ability to use the Internet, the use of distance education in their education is recommended.
