Effect of the educational program based on Pender's theory on the health promotion in patients with obsessive -compulsive disorder

Introduction: Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a chronic disease with the prevalence of 2-3% in general community and is estimated to be 40% in the Iranian society. Research has shown that lifestyle and human behaviors are the causes of many chronic diseases. In this regard, health promotion behaviors can maintain people health. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the educational program based on the Pender's theory on health promotion in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Method: This quasi-experimental study was conducted with one group consisting of 8 patients selected using the convenient sampling method. Two 60minutes educational sessions were held for two groups with three months follow up in a hospital in urban area of Iran. The questionnaire of Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile was used for data gathering. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis.
Results: The mean±SD scores of health promotion lifestyle were 111.37±21 and 139.57±14 before and after the intervention, respectively which was statistically significant (P=0.012).
Conclusion: Nurses can promote a healthy lifestyle through, encouraging healthy behaviors, stress management, adequate rest, and positive relationships with others and increasing, self-control and a sense of responsibility.
