The effects of problem-solving training in reducing anxiety among a group of nursing students

Introduction: Anxiety disorder is the most common psychological issue has extremely increased among universities students. For this reason, this study conducted to investigate if problem solving training could lessen nursing student's anxiety.
Methods: in order to achieve the goal of this study, the Group Pre-test/Post-test Design In a quasi-experimental design was used. The research population was selected of all undergraduate nursing students of Hamdedan Islamin Azad University. A sample of 83 students was randomly taken as a representative of the entire population and administered the Cattell Anxiety Test (1973) to test the degree of their anxiety. Afterward, 36 participants who scored 40 in the Cattell Anxiety Scale were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups and measured their level of anxiety under controlled conditions. Unlike the control group, the experimental group instructed by the problem solving skills throughout eight sessions. As follows, the Cattell Anxiety Scale was administered to measure the level of anxiety for both experimental and control group. The statistical method for analyzing data was ANOVA.
Results: The results indicated significant differences between experimental and control group after receiving problem solving training by experimental group (p< 0.001).
Conclusion: the level of either overt or covert anxiety was significantly decreased among experimental group when they were received the treatment.  Therefore, the problem solving training can be utilized for treating anxiety among students.
