Introduction: Post-traumatic stress disorder has multifaceted emotional aspects including fear and anxiety. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of Grammatical Imagery and Reprocessing Therapy for depression and anxiety in adolescents with posttraumatic stress symptoms.
Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up with a control group. The statistical population included all adolescents aged 13 to 18 years old with post-traumatic stress symptoms who visited counseling and psychological services centers in Tehran in 2024. Among them, 30 people were selected using a convenience sampling method and randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups (15 people in the experimental and control groups) by drawing lots. The subjects in the experimental group received grammatical imagery and reprocessing therapy (12 sessions), one session per week for 60 minutes. The questionnaires for post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms (1988), depression (Beck, 2007), and anxiety (Beck, 1988) were used. Univariate analysis of variance with SPSS version 25 software was used to analyze the data.
Results: The results show that the mean and standard deviation of the depression score changed from 32.40 ± 9.28 in the pre-test to 27.73 ± 8.96 in the post-test, and the anxiety score changed from 29.60 ± 7.94 in the pre-test to 20.33 ± 6.43 in the post-test, and this change continued in the follow-up phase (p < 0.01).
Conclusion: According to the findings, the use of grammatical imagery and reprocessing therapy on reducing depression and anxiety in adolescents with post-traumatic stress symptoms is recommended to psychologists and counselors.
