Abstract:   (20 Views)
Introduction: Thalassemia is a global health problem and the most prevalent inherited blood disorder. This review study aims to explore the needs of adolescents with thalassemia major (TM).
Methods: A scoping review method was utilized in this study according to the methodological framework offered by Arksey and O’Malley with the following 6 stages: identifying the research question; identifying relevant studies; study selection; charting the data; collecting, summarizing, and reporting the results; and consulting with experts to inform or validate the study findings. Review was conducted on previous studies on self-care and self-care needs in adolescents with TM based on the PRISMA for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) framework.
Results: Findings revealed that the self-care needs of adolescents with TM can be divided into the following 8 categories: need for education with new methods, a breeding ground for vulnerability, health maintenance strategies, need for psychological support, knowledge and information management, deficiencies in the medical care system, need for a professional care team, and physical health maintenance problems.
Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that adolescents with TM have unmet needs. They experience challenges in vaeious dimensions including management, treatment, self-care as well as social, educational, and psychological dimensions. There is a great need to raise awareness among parents and other family members, the school team, adolescents, and the treatment team, and the results of studies need to be considered in the management and policy-making system.
