Abstract:   (20 Views)
Introduction: Adolescence is a stressful period for girls, characterized by increased perceived stress and academic adjustment difficulties. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of self-determination skills training on perceived stress and academic adjustment in adolescent girls.
Methods: This semi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest design with a control group and a 2-month follow-up. The statistical population included all first-cycle secondary school girls in Birjand during the academic year 2024-2025. Using a multi-stage cluster sampling method, 40 eligible participants (with low scores in stress and adjustment) were selected and randomly assigned to two groups of 20: an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received a 10-session self-determination skills training protocol, while the control group received no intervention. Data were collected using the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, 1983) and the Academic Adjustment Questionnaire (Sinha & Sink, 1993) and analyzed using ANCOVA in SPSS-26.
Findings: The results showed that the mean perceived stress score in the experimental group decreased significantly compared to the control group (p<0.001, η2=0.885). Also, the mean academic adjustment score in the experimental group increased significantly compared to the control group (p<0.001, η2=0.86). The persistence of the intervention effects continued during the follow-up period.
Conclusion: Teaching self-determination skills by strengthening basic psychological needs leads to reduced stress and improved academic adjustment of adolescent girls. Therefore, implementation of this intervention in the structure of school worship services and curricula is recommended. This approach can help school counselors and nurses to help improve academic adjustment and mental health indicators by empowering students in stress management and self-regulation.
