Introduction: Uniforms play a crucial role in establishing identity and distinguishing the professional roles of healthcare workers. There is no comprehensive legislation regarding the uniforms for various levels and categories of nurses in our country. As a result, patients often struggle to differentiate nursing staff from other healthcare team member. This situation has led to confusion and challenges for patients and, sometimes, dissatisfaction among nurses. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of nurses concerning nursing uniforms.
Methods: This research employs a qualitative descriptive phenomenological approach. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 nurses from June to August 2023 at the School of Nursing and Midwifery and affiliated healthcare centers of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. The interviews were analysed using a seven-step coding method developed by Colaizzi, followed by coding with the MAXQDA 2020 software.
Results: Following the data analysis, 110 initial codes were identified, leading to the emergence of 11 sub-themes, and 4 main themes, which encompass professional identity, functional aspects, aesthetic dimensions and communicative aspects.
Conclusion: Participants in this study emphasized the significance of having a distinct, clean, and tidy uniform. They regarded these features not only as indicators of professional identity but also as a factor influencing role differentiation, enhancing job value, and increasing self-confidence. They expressed a preference for using scrubs due to the comfort they provide and the reduced risk of infection. From an aesthetic perspective, they believed that appropriate uniforms help create a professional image. From a communicative standpoint, uniforms play a significant role in establishing effective communication and increasing patients' trust in nurses.
