Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in children. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of narrative therapy and cognitive-behavioral play therapy in improving social skills in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
Methods: This semi-experimental study was conducted with a pretest-posttest design with control group and follow-up 1 month. The statistical population of the research consisted of all 7–10-year-old children diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder Jam city (Bushehr provincein) academic year 2025-2026. Then the number of 36 children was randomly divided into 3 groups, including a narrative therapy group (12 people), cognitive-behavioral play therapy group (12 people) and a control group (12 people). Then the first experimental group underwent 8 sessions of 60 minutes narrative therapies alone and the second experimental group underwent 8 sessions of 60 minutes of cognitive-behavioral play therapy. To collect data SNAP rating scale (SNAP-IV) and social skills rating system (SSRS). Analysis of variance with repeated measures and Bonferroni post hoc test was used for data analysis. The data analysis software was SPSS version 29
Results The results showed that both interventions had a significant effect on social skills (F=18.75, P=0.001). However, direct comparison of the two intervention groups revealed no statistically significant difference in the total social skills score.
Conclusion: Given the effectiveness of both interventions and the absence of a significant difference between them, narrative therapy and cognitive-behavioral play therapy may be considered appropriate and useful approaches for enhancing social skills in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. However, further research with more diverse samples and longer follow-up periods is needed to determine whether either approach has a relative advantage over the other.
