Introduction: The transition from the family environment to the university and relative or complete independence are among the most important stressors for young people. This study reports on the feeling of homelessness and homesickness of a nursing student, from an educational perspective.
Case Introduction: The case pertains to a 19-year-old male student in his first semester of nursing, with no history of mental disorders. He is the third son and the third child in a family of six members. He hails from a distant city and attends university there. Psychological and psychiatric findings indicate a sense of alienation in the student, manifested by his lack of response to psychological counseling and his suicidal ideation, for which he received pharmacological treatment and psychotherapy sessions. The student experienced social anxiety due to seeking psychological and psychiatric help and taking nerve and psychiatric medications. Academic decline in classroom grades and mid-term assessments was evident due to lack of focus on academic subjects. Following coordination with course instructors, theoretical courses were studied virtually, while practical courses were taken after the end-of-semester examinations and face-to-face training. Coordination was also made with the destination university for the student's transfer as a guest student.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that in order to prevent negative consequences of the sense of alienation in students, there is a need for teamwork and professional communication among professors, faculty officials, academic advisors, and psychologists within the college. Therefore, it is recommended to have counseling and psychotherapy centers available on a daily basis in dormitories and universities.
