Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses, as the main pillars of the healthcare system, were at the forefront of combating the disease. The quality of care nurses provide, especially under difficult pandemic conditions, can significantly affect the recovery process of patients. Compassionate care, which encompasses technical and medical aspects and psychological, ethical, and spiritual realms, has gained exceptional importance. This research aimed to identify organizational factors that influence the emergence of compassionate care from the perspective of nurses working in the COVID-19 wards.
Method: This study was conducted using a qualitative approach based on descriptive phenomenology.A non-random and purposeful sampling was conducted in the summer of 2021among the nurses of the COVID-19 wards in Shohada Kargar and Shahid Rahnamon hospitals in Yazd city. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews until data saturation was achieved, which was the sixteenth participant, with observed ethical principles and permission obtained from the interviewees. Data analysis was performed using the Colaizzi method in seven stages.
Results: After extracting and analyzing the concepts, 23 subthemes and eventually 7 themes were identified, including material and welfare issues, security provision, efficient organizational managers, reduction of work pressure, provision of medical facilities, creation of opportunities for staff growth and development, and the system’s appreciation for nurses.
Conclusion: The results showed that compassionate care requires a robust organizational foundation supported by management, cultural, and educational factors. Recognizing and strengthening these factors can foster the emergence of compassionate care and ultimately lead to better patient health. The results of this study can be utilized to raise awareness and expand this type of care in medical centers, thereby improving patient care and facilitating a faster recovery.
