Introduction: The doctoral program in nursing in Iran and other countries worldwide is experiencing a growing trend; nevertheless, significant differences are observed in its implementation methods. Examining these differences can contribute to the improvement of this academic level. Therefore, the aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the PhD in Nursing curriculum in Iran and at Queen’s University, Canada.
Methods: This comparative study collected the required data through a review of documents published on official websites. Persian keywords, including comparative study, educational curriculum, PhD in Nursing, Iran, and Queen’s University Canada, along with their English equivalents, were used to identify relevant articles. The data were analyzed using Bereday’s model in four stages: description, interpretation, juxtaposition, and comparison.
Results: The Iranian PhD in Nursing program is designed based on a humanistic and holistic philosophy, with the aim of training specialized experts in five key areas: education, research, technology, management, and specialized nursing services. Its structure consists of forty-five credit units, with an emphasis on clinical management. In contrast, the program at Queen’s University, Canada, is founded on the philosophy of health transition and research empowerment, with objectives including research development, critical thinking, leadership, and scientific publication. Admission requirements at this university are more rigorous and include a B+ grade point average, a four-part statement emphasizing the principles of Indigenization, equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and anti-racism, as well as a language proficiency score. The program spans four years and follows a hybrid model combining in-person and virtual learning.
Conclusion: Comparison of the two programs revealed differences in educational orientation, program structure, admission requirements, and the research process. Strengthening interdisciplinary research, incorporating staged assessments, and considering applicants’ research interests may be considered in revising the PhD in Nursing program in Iran.
